Linux or Windows

Linux VPS or Windows VPS?

Both run on the same hardware. Pick the operating system your software needs.

Ubuntu / Debian / AlmaLinux

Linux VPS hosting

Root access over SSH on Ubuntu, Debian or AlmaLinux. This is the usual choice for websites, web apps, APIs, databases and Docker containers.

Linux uses less memory than Windows for the same job, so the same plan goes further.

Windows Server

Windows VPS server

A full Windows Server desktop over Remote Desktop (RDP), with administrator access.

Use it for Windows-only software, .NET apps, trading platforms or a remote office desktop. If you need a cheap Windows VPS with RDP, Starter is the place to begin.

The basics

What is VPS hosting?

VPS hosting gives you a virtual private server: a reserved share of a physical server with its own CPU, RAM, storage and operating system, plus root or administrator access. Other customers share the hardware, but not your resources, and you control everything inside your server.

It sits between shared hosting and a dedicated server. You get the control of a dedicated server at a price closer to shared hosting, and you can resize when your project grows.

How to choose the right VPS plan

Start from what you will run, not from the biggest number you can afford.

Use cases

What people run on them.

  • A

    Websites and web apps

Node, Python, PHP or a plain Nginx. Install your own stack, set your own limits.

  • B

    Databases and APIs

Keep Postgres, MySQL or Redis on a server that is not shared with someone else's busy site.

  • C

    Game and voice servers

Pick a location near your players and open the ports you need.

  • D

    Remote Windows desktop

Log in over RDP from anywhere to run business software, trading platforms or bots.

Honest advice

When a VPS is the wrong choice

A VPS is more work than shared hosting. Skip it if one of these sounds like you.

01

One small blog

You run one small WordPress site and do not want to update a server. Shared hosting costs less and someone else patches it.

02

You want it managed

You need someone else to run the server. Our VPS hosting is unmanaged, so a managed VPS from another provider fits you better.

03

You need a whole machine

Licensing or compliance rules require physical hardware that only you use. Choose a dedicated server.

Get started

How to buy a VPS

Three steps from order to login.

  1. 01

Pick a plan and operating system

Choose Linux or Windows, then the vCPU, RAM and storage that fit your workload.

  2. 02

    Choose a location

Select the data centre closest to your users. Closer servers respond faster.

  3. 03

    Pay and log in

Your server is set up after payment and the IP address and login arrive by email.

After you order

Your first hour on a new VPS

Unmanaged means security is your job. Do these six things before anything goes live.

  1. 01

    Update the system

Run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade on Ubuntu or Debian, or sudo dnf upgrade on AlmaLinux. On Windows Server, run Windows Update and restart.

  2. 02

    Stop logging in as root

Create a normal user with sudo rights, then set PermitRootLogin no in the SSH configuration so attackers cannot guess the root password.

  3. 03

    Use SSH keys, not passwords

Copy your public key with ssh-copy-id, check that it works, then set PasswordAuthentication no and restart SSH.

  4. 04

    Turn on a firewall

Allow only the ports you use, for example sudo ufw allow OpenSSH and then sudo ufw enable. On Windows, keep Windows Defender Firewall on and limit who can reach RDP.

  5. 05

    Patch automatically

Install unattended-upgrades on Ubuntu or Debian, or dnf-automatic on AlmaLinux, so security fixes land without you remembering.

  6. 06

Back up, then test a restore

Copy your data off the server on a schedule. Restore it once to a test folder. A backup you have never restored is a guess.

Questions

VPS hosting FAQ

What is a VPS server?

A VPS server is a virtual machine on a physical server shared with other VPSs. It has its own reserved CPU, RAM and storage, its own operating system and full root or administrator access, like a small dedicated server.

How much does VPS hosting cost?

Linux VPS plans start at $9.99 per month and Windows VPS plans at $9.99 per month. There is no setup fee and you pay monthly.

Is your VPS hosting managed or unmanaged?

Unmanaged. You look after the operating system, software updates and backups. We run the hardware, the network and the control panel, and support helps with anything on our side.

Should I choose a Linux VPS or a Windows VPS?

Choose Linux for websites, web apps, APIs, databases and Docker. Choose Windows when your software only runs on Windows or you want a remote desktop over RDP.

Can I buy a VPS for one month?

Yes. Billing is monthly with no contract. Cancel from your account at any time and the server runs until the end of the month you paid for.

Do I get full root access?

Yes. Linux servers come with root over SSH and Windows servers with administrator over RDP. You can install anything your software license allows.

Can I upgrade my VPS later?

Yes. Move to a larger plan from the control panel when you need more vCPU, RAM or storage. A resize can need one reboot, which usually takes a few minutes.

Do I need technical skills to run a VPS?

Some. On Linux you should be comfortable with the command line and SSH. On Windows you need to look after Windows Server over RDP. If you would rather not, shared hosting or a managed VPS is the better fit.

What can I run on a VPS server?

Websites, web apps, APIs, databases, Docker containers, game and voice servers, and Windows software over RDP. The acceptable use policy lists what is not allowed.

Where are your VPS servers located?

In 47 locations across North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and Oceania. You choose the location when you order. See the full list on the locations page.
